The Wittliff Collections presents a brand-new exhibit featuring more than 90 photographs captured in Mexico and India.
Texas State’s Wittliff Collections opened the door Janurary 21st to a unique collection of photographs titled “Man And Beast” by the award-winning artist, Mary Ellen Mark. Mark took her photographs while traveling to various circuses through Mexico and India. The Wittcliff Collections Media Relations representative Michele Miller said the images show artist’s fascination with a paradox of human qualities of animals and a beastly nature of humans.
“Some of them are very controversial. But they shed light on things and they are documentary in a sense that this is how it was at the time, taking a look at things historically.”

“Man And Beast” is additionally a part of the Wittcliff Collections’ photography book series, including more than 100 images by Mark and her story about the experiences. Miller also mentions how fortunate the Wittcliff Collection is to have Mark’s work.
“She actually gave us these at cost…look at it as sort of a donation, she doesn’t do that just for anybody.”
– Michele Miller
The exhibit is open to the public and will reside at the Wittcliff Collections, located on the 7th floor in the Alkek Library, through December 7th. Mark will be making an appearance at the Witliff Collections on April 27th to talk about her art.
