In Reel Life: Safety Not Guaranteed

This week, I thought I would introduce “Safety Not Guaranteed.” This movie was screened back in 2012 at the Sundance Film Festival. It won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, which recognizes outstanding screenwriting.

“Safety Not Guaranteed” stars Audrey Plaza, who you might recognize as April from the T-V series “Parks and Rec.” Other familiar faces include Jack Johnson, who plays Nick Miller in the T-V series “New Girl” and Mark Duplass, who has a recurring role in the T-V series “The Mindy Project.”

This group does an outstanding job in “Safety Not Guaranteed,” about Duplass’ character, Kenneth, who places an ad in a newspaper asking for a p artner to follow him back in time in a time machine he has created. The ad reads: “Wanted: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have done this once before.”

You can see how this ad could be taken as joke. The movie begins with Plaza’s character, Darius, and Johnson’s character, Jeff, on a mission to find the guy who placed the ad for a magazine article. All of them, except Darius, believe Kenneth is nuts.

Darius convinces Kenneth that she is the real deal and will travel back in time with him.

Kenneth believes there are people following him because of his mission to travel back in time to reunite with an old crush named Belinda.

Kenneth and Darius go through extensive training to prepare for any danger they may encounter going back to 2001. You see them grow closer as Darius begins to truly believe that Kenneth can travel back in time.

Throughout the movie, you see each character go through different stages of life. Jeff realizes there’s more than just being a ladies man, while Darius, who has spent her whole life feeling she’s doesn’t belong anywhere finally finds where she does, with Kenneth. You can see in the movie that Darius felt out of place until she met Kenneth.

Conflict occurs when Darius accuses Kenneth of lying, that is, until they share a fun night together where they’re able to be themselves.

This is more than just a time machine adventure. There are people in this world that will tell believers not to believe, but the believers are the people that are willing to put themselves on the line and turn impossible things into possibilities.

In the the end, Kenneth says, “ To go it alone, or to go with a partner. When you choose a partner, you have to have compromises and sacrifices, but it’s the price you pay. Do I want to follow my every whim and desire as I make my way through time and space? Absolutely. But at the end of the day, do I need someone when I’m doubting myself and I’m insecure, and my heart’s failing me? Do I need someone who, when the heat gets hot, has my back?” When Darius asks, “So, do you?” Kenneth says, “ I do.” [Don’t read this, include this scene as a sound bite.]

“Safety Not Guaranteed” is about sticking with a friend until the end, in whatever they believe because that’s what a friend is, someone that’s able to go through the tough times, someone to trust and go on adventures with.

I recommend this movie to you because it makes you want to believe in anything that you put your mind to, no matter what anyone thinks.

In Reel Life: Giant Mechanical Man

by Roslyn Barrutia KTSW Other Side Drive When you’re in college, you always get asked the same questions, what are you going to do after you graduate?, Any plans?, Any jobs lined up? I don’t know about you but those questions stress me out to the max and I’m only in my 20’s. Well, in The Giant Mechanical Man, there are two 30 something-year-old people who are lost, trying to figure […]
