My whole life, my dad always told me to do things that made me stand out, so I did. I accomplished many things as a young girl and a teenager and as I grew older I knew that I wanted to continue to try new things that would make people acknowledge my name. To see the name, “Kalie Souknary” on fliers, on websites, on t-shirts, basically anything. I loved the attention. I would watch movies where college kids worked for radio stations and got to pick the music that went on air. The thought that something I put on the radio could be heard in regions around the state was just amazing to me. How could someone so young– my age, be recognized for that?

The first time I heard KTSW was hiring, I was outside Alkek Teaching Theatre waiting for my Fundamentals of Digital and Online Media class to start in the Fall of 2013. My friends and teachers had always told me I had a great voice, so I decided to take a chance and apply for the News department, because although most of my work was in writing, I wanted to test my speaking skills and see if I was really as good as everyone said. Why not? As a Public Relations major, it would be good to get this experience.

Before I knew it, I was a news anchor for KTSW News, learning how to work the hot keys, how to produce a story, how to edit, and how to get it on the air. Hearing my voice on air for the first time was such an amazing feeling. I felt like I was finally getting the chance I knew I deserved. I knew that anyone could be listening and learn my name. Getting texts from my friends and family telling me that I did a great job was probably the best part.

Unfortunately that was the first and only semester I was able to work for KTSW for a while. Recently, I was hired as a blog content contributor for the fall of 2015. If you aren’t already aware, FDOM requires that you create a blog about an interest or passion. I’ve blogged for years before this class, so I already knew what I was doing and enjoy it. The reason I love it so much is it helps get my name out there and build a brand for myself but also contribute to an already well-known radio station. Here at KTSW, we provide a family-like atmosphere that I always saw in the movies. The fact that this sort of atmosphere has become a reality for me as well as many other KTSW staff members is just amazing.

There is so much to be learned here and so many people to connect with. The work is hard, the expectations are high, but it’s all worth it. I’m so glad to be able to continue to work here and would definitely recommend others to join because there is a spot here for everyone– as long as they are willing to help build the legacy that is KTSW San Marcos.
