Don’t Waste Your Time

Every semester there’s a lot going on in the quad; from school organizations promoting themselves, to people selling kettle corn, jewelry, and giving out free hugs. In all of the chaos that has taken place in the quad I still wonder, who are the random people preaching and causing a crowd of students to be outraged? Are these people actually allowed to be on campus, causing a commotion? Are they for real or are they just here to get a rise out of people, and what do students really think? On Tuesday, October 5, a man preached in the Quad for over five hours spouting out the usual nonsense others before him had said. Here’s a recap of his speech from students in the crowd:

1. Women can’t have opinions – this brought out the feminist in the crowd who had plenty to say back.
2. We are all going to Hell – thanks bro
3. Gay is not Ok – but this guy spreading hate messages is?
4. He’s a Profit/Saint – guess that sums up who you are

In my three years here at Texas State i have learned to just keep walking when I hear these people in the quad. They are insulting every person’s faith or lack thereof and they shouldn’t be allowed on campus. Especially if all they are doing is pissing people off and causing students to get rowdy. I did not witness this guy’s entire time on campus but from the time i arrived on the scene to the time I left there were several screaming matches that were one part ignorance and two parts in your face. As tension progressed through the crowd racy things were being called out that were definitely not for everybody’s ears, which was unfortunate because there were children in the quad at the time. Regardless of the fact that most people walking around campus are of age and we all have freedom of speech, I prefer my walk to class to be peaceful and classy. I don’t want the first thing i hear when i step outside to be a rage of explicits toward people. Texas State is a respectable campus and we should keep it that way.
Texas State is also a campus that prides itself on diversity and being inclusive. Random people with no affiliation to the University, other than the fact they may live in San Marcos, spreading hate messages discourages the diversity and inclusiveness we work toward. It also makes it appear that religious organizations are crazy, hateful, and excluding people when this is far from the actual case. When asked about the situation, Hannah Weaver felt that as a christian this man was misrepresenting her faith by preaching incorrect interpretations of the scripture and proudly shouted to the crowd to join her and fellow bobcats at Young Life, a christian organization on campus. Next time one of these hate preaching people show up on campus just keep walking. Starting an ugly scene in the quad is a waist of your time and you can’t afford to waste a second with all that school work to do.
