Coming into the 2015 San Marcos Rattlers season, it was about how quarterback David Hamilton could lead the team to a winning season, for the first time since 2006. Well it has not been just David Hamilton who has been carrying the load. Running back Cavion Garner has been carrying the Rattlers since David Hamilton’s injury, and now the Rattlers are upon their first winning season in nine years. Because of his efforts, Cavion Garner has been named team MVP for the 2015 football season, by the KTSW Rattlers staff and myself.

Coming into the last game of his junior season against Lockhart, Garner has 1,216 rushing yards with 171 carries so far. He is averaging 135.1 yards per game, 7.1 yards per carry and is second on the team for total touchdowns with 14 total touchdowns. He is also tied with David Hamilton for the most rushing touchdowns with 13. Garner is also fifth on the team in receiving yards right now with 119 yards and one touchdown.

There were two games that really stood out this year for Cavion Garner; those games being against Alamo Heights and Victoria East. Even though it ended in a 63-53 loss, his best performance of the year so far was against Alamo Heights where he had 211 yards on 24 carries, averaging 8.8 yards per carry, along with two touchdowns. Going against Victoria East, he was the main reason for the Rattlers victory with 200 yards on 19 carries, averaging 10.4 yards per carry and a big 56 yard touchdown run to seal a 61-55 victory.

The next time Garner will be in action is Friday, November 13, as the Rattlers have made the playoffs. They will face the Harlandale Indians at 7 p.m., on KTSW.net
