San Marcos’ Tarot Card Reader Hopes to Give Residents Answers and Closure

The Farmer’s Market is a popular way to spend a Saturday morning for many within the San Marcos community. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., fresh fruits, veggies, eggs and an array of homemade and homegrown products can be found along San Antonio Street on the Square.

Amongst these vendors is Thema Markwalter, a stay-at-home mother of two who has a passion for tarot cards. For 12 years, Markwalter has practiced the art of reading tarot cards and explains that the process is not as simple as it may seem.

“You have to be empathetic,” said Markwalter. “It helps you see how the card is connected to the person that you’re reading. But it’s all energy based…the cards have a certain energy and you have a certain energy. It can be very intimate. And many times, people will break down during a session.”

Despite skeptics, Markwalter reports that her readings have come out accurate more times than she can even comprehend. She explains that this is because her particular card deck is more complex than others and is able to go out and find answers to the life-questions you’re having in that moment.

Markwalter said that tarot cards sparked her interest after the first reading she received years ago.

“I was about to get a divorce, even though I didn’t know it at the time,” said Markwalter. “I pulled six cards and they all were the phoenix tarot, which means you’re going to crash and burn but then great things will come out of it. I now have remarried and had two beautiful kids.”

For Thema Markwalter, tarot card reading is not just a pastime, it is a powerful being. Not only has it helped improve her own life, but it has helped the lives of many others by giving them answers, bravery and closure.

“We are responsible for the energy we give to the world and the energy we get back,” said Markwalter. “We are connected to the rhythm of the earth and if we can accept this, then beautiful things can come into our lives.”
