Texas State Police Department’s Chat With The Chief had its first table event of the spring semester last Wednesday. Chat With The Chief is the department’s initiative to connect police officers with students, where officers and Chief Jose Bañales set up a table in the Quad and take time to talk with faculty and students on campus. Chief Bañales said Chat With The Chief is a way to maintain a relationship with faculty and students.

“My goal is, one, to create an environment in the police department where we’re approachable,” said Bañales. “Two, that we may be responsive to the community needs, and three, that we’re always out here with our outreach, making sure that we’ll build upon the trust and confidence that the university community has in our police department.”
Chief Bañales says since the protests of November’s election, the police department wants to support faculty and students in their individual rights.
“We’re here to provide a safe environment for the students, faculty and staff,” Bañales said. “So that they may exercise their right to protest and assemble, and do those kind of things.”
Chat With The Chief will be held monthly in the Quad for students and faculty to connect with the Texas State Police Department over coffee and donuts.
