Texas State spent a majority of the night putting up shots that walked the plank, losing the game 56-54 to Coastal Carolina and leaving fans worried about their offensive slump going forward.

It was not too long ago that the Bobcats had our attention after pulling off a six game winning streak. I was feeling good about this team’s ability to grind out wins in the toughest way… shutdown defense and clutch shots, but like a night to remember (actually to forget) in the square, the hangover has hit hard. Since the Bobcats won six in a row they have lost three of their last four. The reason for the skid is simply because they are shooting 35 percent over this stretch.

This game was no different. The team shot 33 percent from the floor, highlighted by their 5-25 clip from downtown. The worst part is that Texas State got all of those three-pointers in the first half and went 0-11 after halftime. In the end, the offense down the stretch was not sharp, culminating in a over 13 second half minutes without a field goal. If you’re looking for a bright spot offensively I can share this with you. The ‘cats shot 15-20 from the free throw line (hooray).

Leading the way was sophomore guard Nijal Pearson’s game-high 16 points. He received some help from starting forward Alex Peacock, who woke up from his recent offensive slumber by scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-high of nine rebounds. However, the guy who made the difference for the Chanticleers proved that you do not have to score all the time, just at the right time. Demario Beck scored all four of his points in overtime. The final bucket put Coastal Carolina ahead with 1.3 seconds left to seal their current four game winning streak.

Now is the time for the Bobcats to prove themselves over the final month of the regular season. They can start Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. versus Appalachian State. Tune in after the women’s team tries to extend their three game winning streak following a 2:00 p.m. tip off. Catch all that action right here on KTSW 89.9!
