Texas State University’s Common Experience serves to educate the campus through speakers, events and text, and the theme for the 2018-2019 school year has finally been revealed: Innovation.

Each year, incoming first-year students receive a book related to the year’s theme to discuss during University Seminar. This year’s book, The Runaway Species: How Human Creativity Remakes the World, is written by composer Anthony Brandt and neuroscientist David Eagleman.

Last year’s “Search for Justice: Our Response to Crime in the 21st Century” theme brought experts from around the globe to discuss the death penalty, crime and other topics related to criminal justice reform. Prominent lawyers such as Anthony Graves and Bryan Stevenson spoke this past year about their experiences with the criminal justice system.
