Caroline Janes, better known by her radio alias: DJ CJ, hosts the radio show Times Like These on Wednesday nights at 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The general theme of Times Like These is the best of indie rock and pop from both current music and the classics. On occasion, Janes likes to hone into sub-genres of indie music to create specific themed shows.
“Basically, I play indie music, it’s pretty standard. The Strokes, The Black Keys and then I also play lesser known people. Sometimes I try to have a theme with my show, like the week before last I did surf rock, which was really fun,” said Janes.
Another theme that DJ CJ has done, and continues to come back to, is new singles. During her show on Oct. 10, she told me she plans to play indie singles that have been released in the last few months. Janes is also exploring doing a psychedelic-rock themed show with bands like Tame Impala, Temples and The Babe Rainbow.
On-air, Janes is fresh and engaging. She is knowledgeable regarding the content she is playing, which creates a sense of one-on-one interactivity with the listener. When listening to Times Like These, you feel like you are in a conversation with one of your friends.
Janes did not always feel so comfortable in the unique realm of indie-rock creativity that KTSW fosters; although, she said that after her first semester of DJ-ing, she quickly felt like she belonged.
“I remember when I was a freshman…I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, KTSW seems so cool,’ and it seemed so intimidating,” said Janes.
Janes was a history major before KTSW “converted her.” She is now majoring in advertising with a minor in art, which she feels allow her to express more creativity. Janes began her DJ career last fall with her co-host Chase Massey. Massey is now the station manager for KTSW but remembers his and Jane’s DJ days fondly.
“We had some fun times back then. We would bounce back and forth, and we had a pretty good dynamic going. Now I see her coming back for her own specialty show and it’s great, seeing a friend hone her skills and really enjoy herself on-air,” said Massey.
Janes and Massey will reunite on-air for College Radio Day, Oct. 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. You can catch Janes regularly on Wednesday nights on the radio at FM-89.9 or you can live stream Times Like These here.
