“I think I’m the only person in the world who hasn’t watched a single episode of Game of Thrones.”
For loyal Game of Thrones fan, I think that the sentence mentioned above might be the most annoying thing to hear. Especially after an emotionally intense episode like “The Long Night” (I’m still recovering from it). We all know on–or sometimes even more than one–person who has never watched Game of Thrones and the appropriate response is “How? Why not?” For those of you who have never watched a single episode of Game of Thrones, I’m here to explain why you should have a change of heart.
I used to be just like you — honestly. Whenever someone talked about Game of Thrones (GoT) to me I’d say, “I think I’m the only person in the world who hasn’t watched a single episode of Game of Thrones.” So who better to persuade you to watch GoT than a person who was just like you in the beginning?
I’ll give you the backstory on how I started watching GoT. I knew the basic premise of the show and some of the major characters like Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, but that was just the tip of the iceberg! Now, most people start watching a show at episode one and I would have done the same thing but my journey with GoT was different. My roommate was a loyal GoT fan and was watching the season seven finale late at night. I had been out with friends but when I came back she had fifteen minutes left of the finale. I decided to sit and watch even though I had no idea what was going on. Well, I’m not going to spoil it for you, but it was a cliffhanger!
Afterwards, I started watching the very first episode followed by the second and third. Before I knew it, I was binge watching – hard! Whenever I had time I found myself trying to squeeze episodes in between studying. So let’s get into why you should start watching Game of Thrones!
First reason, the story is compelling. It’s based off an incredibly successful book series called “A Song of Fire and Ice”. The story has dysfunctional families, feuding houses, dragons, wars and knights. What more could you want! As you watch episodes, you won’t find yourself reaching for your phone to check notifications because you have lost interest in the show. As a matter of fact, you’ll probably put your phone on do not disturb mode so it doesn’t pull you away from watching GoT.
The second reason is that you won’t get the feeling of missing out (FOMO). When new GoT episodes premiere social media (specifically Twitter) is flooded with fans commenting and reacting. Now you’ll be able to join in on the fun and understand the hype! Like “The Long Night” left fans emotionally drained and so many memes and reactions were being posted on Twitter.
Thirdly, it’s worth the hype! GoT has won 47 Emmys so far and it might win more after its final season ends. Each episode feels like watching a movie and it has a large enough budget to feel like you’re watching a movie. The characters will resonate with viewers and make them cheer for them on screen throughout their journey.
Lastly, GoT is on its last season. It will end on May 19. Wouldn’t you rather join the GoT fan base sooner than later after this critically acclaimed series ends?
You can stream GoT on HBO for free if you have an AT&T unlimited plan and HBO is letting people stream the very first episode for free!
