A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an article about Disney’s highly awaited Disney Plus streaming service that launched on Nov. 12. In the article, I discussed the many power moves Disney made to make Disney Plus possible like acquiring the Fox library and becoming the majority shareholder of Hulu.
They also own the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars franchise as well as National Geographic. All of this content is available to stream on Disney Plus.
In my previous article, I mentioned how Netflix could acquire Nickelodeon’s library since Nickelodeon has been a major competitor to Disney for years. It would be a power move for both companies since Netflix is the world’s largest streaming service.
On Nov. 13 it was announced that Netflix and Nickelodeon would be partnering up in a multi-year deal – this comes out only one day after Disney Plus launched.
Nickelodeon President Brian Robbins said their next step is “to keep expanding beyond linear platforms, and our broader content partnership with Netflix is a key path toward that goal.”
“The Nickelodeon Animation Studio,” he continued, “is home to the world-class artists and storytellers behind some of the most iconic characters and shows ever made, and our Head of Animation, Ramsey Naito, has been building on that legacy over the past year by ramping up development and production exponentially. The ideas and work at our studio are flowing, and we can’t wait to work with Melissa and the Netflix team on a premium slate of original animated content for kids and families around the world.”
This deal will include new original feature films and TV series based on existing Nickelodeon library characters as well as newly created ones.
“Nickelodeon has generated scores of characters that kids love, and we look forward to telling wholly original stories that re-imagine and expand on the worlds they inhabit,” said Netflix Vice President of original animation, Melissa Cobb, in the official announcement.
“We’re thrilled to continue collaborating with Brian Robbins, Ramsey Naito, and the creative team at Nickelodeon in new ways as we look to find fresh voices and bring bold stories to our global audience on Netflix.”
Recently, the Nick show “Victorious” became available to stream on Netflix. Fans shared their excitement on Twitter by posting screenshots of the show’s memorable moments and soon enough memes began to spread across Twitter.
Even the stars of “Victorious” Victoria Justice, Ariana Grande and Elizabeth Gillies have interacted with fans on Twitter and shared their appreciation to fans who are streaming it. With this new deal, could a “Victorious” reboot be a possibility? I hope so.
But that’s not where the relationship with Nickelodeon and Netflix began. In late 2018, Netflix announced that they would be creating a live-action remake of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” – one of Nick’s most popular shows.
Earlier this year, Netflix became home to specials like “Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling” and “Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus”.
With all of these TV shows coming back to Netflix years later, you have to wonder if Netflix is trying to make similar moves like Disney was prior to the launch of Disney Plus. Are they now exploiting nostalgia for monetary gain like Disney was and continues to do?
In recent years, Disney has remade some of their classic animated films into live-action remakes. Some have become box-office hits like “Beauty & the Beast” “The Jungle Book” and “The Lion King”.
Is Netflix now trying to accumulate shows from our childhood to remake or reboot to compete with the giant that is Disney?
The Netflix-Nickelodeon deal sounds like it. With this deal, Netflix might be able to remain the top streaming service in the world but Disney Plus has become their top competitor.
