Everyone’s first year at Texas State is full of changes and new experiences, and there are many resources and tips to guide you through the change. Here are a few tips that people often forget to tell freshmen.

Course Numbers and Locations

One of the main things people forget to tell freshmen is what the numbers and letters associated with their courses mean.

These numbers are called the course number, and they follow a four-digit system. The first digit indicated the level of the course: 1-freshman, 2-sophomore, 3-junior, 4-senior, 5- and 6-graduate and post-graduate and 7-doctorate. This does not mean the course can only be taken in that year, simply how hard the course may be.

The second digit represents the number of semester credit hours the course carries. For example, a course numbered 2300 would be a sophomore level class and carry three semester credit hours. Lastly, the last two digits represent the location of the course in the curriculum in the specific department.

Along with the course number, you will receive the location of the class in an abbreviation. These abbreviations stand for the name of the campus building. For example, ALK stands for the Albert B. Alkek Library. Instead of a building abbreviation, you may see something similar to ARR which stands for “arranged.” This generally means the course is held online.

For more information about course credits and registration visit the Texas State Registration and Course Credit website.

Student Resources

Texas State University is equipped with many different resources to help students succeed. These resources include the Writing Center, Math Cats, SLAC and more. These resources are located around campus with students available to help in every subject.

The Writing Center is located across The Den dining hall and helps students by providing a writing-tutor to work with. Students can book appointments starting the first week of classes and improve their writing in any stage of the process and in any style.

Math Cats is located in Derrick Hall 238 and will help tutor students in any math courses Texas State offers. The lab provides drop-in and personal tutoring as well as computers for individualized work.

SLAC or Student Learning Assistance Center is located on the fourth floor of the Albert B. Alkek Library and offers tutoring services,  supplemental instruction and learning and study skill workshops. Students can request assistance in any course Texas State offers.

Social Life

College can be a scary place. It’s a new environment and you will meet people you may or may not like. The most important thing to remember is that everyone is going through the same thing as you.

This year especially, it may be hard to make new friends and meet new people. Something to remember is that not everyone you meet will be your best friend. It is important not to force friendships and remember you will find your clique.

On the flip side, don’t be scared to reach out to people or ask to sit with someone. Everyone is in the same place as you and is trying to make friends too. One simple interaction can change everything.
