DJ Ortiz and Doogie C. are both local artists who have created their own paths for success.
DJ Ortiz hails from Houston, Texas while Doogie C. from Kileen, Texas. Both artists merged paths while participating in Hip Hop Congress and have seen some major successes during their careers.
DJ Ortiz, aka James Ortiz, is a resident DJ at The Marc and on 6th street in Austin. Ortiz is a current senior at Texas State and initially started to DJ his freshman year. Ortiz immediately fell in love with DJing and sought to do something great.
In 2018, Hip Hop Congress hosted the first-ever “Latin Night” at The Marc. Ortiz was a founding member of this event and saw the success of it grow over time. Initially, “Latin Night” hosted a different DJ, but Ortiz knew that this was an event he would want to DJ and eventually took over.
Fast forward to 2019 and Ortiz is DJing “Latin Night” to a full capacity venue. Since then, he has become a resident DJ and now hosts weekly “Latin Night” on Tuesday. He also hosts monthly brunches at Industry, as well as nights on 6th street.
Doogie C., or Cameron Jones, is a local rapper who is ready to conquer the world.
Jones is a junior here at Texas State and started rapping as a kid. Like Ortiz, Jones is involved with the Hip Hop Congress. Through this organization, Jones was able to perform at Bobcat Preview during Diversity Presentations, performing with his hit song “College Boy.”
Prior to the pandemic, Jones could usually be found performing live. However, like many in-person events, live performances have been put on hold. Jones has been using this downtime to collaborate with artists, create new music and find creative ways to interact with fans, growing his name.
Both artists have music for their fans to listen to and are in the works of releasing new projects. I have been lucky to get to personally know these two artists through Hip Hop Congress and cannot wait to see what they accomplish.
It is a surreal feeling to see people you know grow as individuals and do the things they truly love.
“Latin Night” is a great way to go out and meet new people as well as enjoy a live DJ. Already Jones is working on some performances as vaccines roll out and social-distancing orders decrease.
