The organization of the month I chose to write about is Texas State Sirens, an all-inclusive unity of women organization that was established this fall.
Texas State Sirens is a women empowerment organization devoted to supporting women by other women. It’s mission is to help collegiate women with the pressures and struggles that are embodied within campus culture; moreover, its goal is to provide resources, a safe space, and support for women in college.
The reasoning behind the name “sirens” was because sirens were known as powerful, mythical creatures, similar to mermaids, and the organization wanted the name to embody the strong women within the organization. The organization did not only want to incorporate the university but the city of San Marcos as well.
San Marcos is known as the mermaid capital of Texas due to it’s mermaid statues throughout the city and annual mermaid festival the city hosts. The goal was to be based around the city and provide a balanced mixture of campus and community outreach.
The structure of Texas State Sirens is that it has monthly themes undergoing topics that can be controversial and uncomfortable but bring light and support to the surface for the forefront benefit of its members. Themes that the organization are social media pressures, mental health, body image, peer pressure, and much more. Adding onto that, it is having guest speakers of strong, empowering women in the workforce that have made a difference. The mission of this, ultimately, is to motivate and inspire the members.
The history behind the organization was that it was created by five Texas State undergraduate women with passion and devotion towards women empowerment. As mentioned before, this organization was launched this fall semester and has been continuing to grow day by day. The executive board is passionate about making the organization accommodating for each and every one of their members, and to always keep their best interests at the forefront.
