Texas State may have the label of “party school”, but let’s be honest, most college students like to go out and party. They enjoy going out to a nightclub, dance hall, or anywhere where the vibes are right. In San Marcos, two nightclubs on the square that I have heard about, Nephews and the Red Room Social Lounge, both have positive reviews for great vibes. There are a few more that I am not as familiar with, The Marc, The Vault, Veranda Rooftop Bar and Patio.

However, one club that became infamous within the community was Stonewall Warehouse.

Stonewall Warehouse was an LGBT bar/club, but it recently closed down in the beginning of January. Many people were saddened to see Stonewall close down, with several making Instagram posts honoring the memories made at the infamous nightclub and how they would miss its welcoming atmosphere. The owner was sad to sell it, but she is happy that the owners of Axis, a Premier Underground Bar in downtown San Marcos, bought it.

The Axis owners in San Marcos bought the building and are planning to open a new nightclub there called Wildfire, which should be open fairly soon in early April.

Supposedly, there might’ve been interested buyers from Austin, but the owners of Axis wanted to keep it local. That also means there won’t be any crazy high Austin level prices either.

I asked a few college students their thoughts on the new nightclub opening up, and here is what they had to say. “That is pretty cool! I’m excited and I like that there are going to be more options for us to go out and enjoy ourselves in San Marcos,” said Yaneli Aguilar, a geography major at Texas State University. “I think it’s great and I’m excited to go out there when it opens,” said Laci Stautzenberger, a biology major and fellow Texas State student.

While you wait for Wildfire to make its grand opening, visit Axis to show support to the new owners while enjoying a night out in the square!

For other recommendations, I would suggest Nephew’s or Red Room Social Lounge. Everyone I have talked to about going out in San Marcos love Nephew’s. They have cheap prices, nice bartenders, and a great atmosphere. Another popular pick is Red Room Social Lounge, which has a much more laidback vibe than Nephew’s. They have live music after two a.m. on weekends as a way to wind down, with a relaxing atmosphere to follow suit.

Nevertheless, I am excited for Wildfire to open, as well so many other students at Texas State and the San Marcos area!
