GRAMMY U: A path to a successful career in music

Are you interested in starting your career in the music industry and do not know where to begin? Are you worried about building your platform with no prior credentials? A  solution can be GRAMMY U.

Founded in 2006, GRAMMY U is a membership program that aids to “bridge connections between the music industry and aspiring professionals raring to be part of it.” With 14 student representatives across the 12 chapters and over 100 volunteer ambassadors, GRAMMY U links the creative minds of people aged 18-29 with the various opportunities and tools necessary to start their careers.

While it was originally created for college students exclusively, the restrictions for those purchasing a membership have lessened in the past year. Now, the only requirement is age!

With the GRAMMY U membership, patrons have access to special events, workshops and professional development programs. Participants can also work behind the scenes and gain volunteer and internship experiences. A membership costs $50 and lasts a total of four years from application acceptance. Once the four years are up, members can renew their membership for $50 annually if they still meet eligibility requirements.

In addition, GRAMMY U is not limited to just those interested in making music. Young adults who are focused in areas such as producing, songwriting, management and much more can find opportunities in purchasing a membership.

“I am not sure where else I could get the in-person experience that GRAMMY U provides me with,” said Melanie Salazar, one of the Texas Chapter Ambassadors.

Salazar, who is an aspiring music journalist, said that one of her best memories working with the program was when she completed a “sound check” with singer and actor, Reneé Rapp. At the event, she was able to attend the artist’s performance and then take part in a Q&A where she was able to submit her own questions.

In the 2022-23 program year, the organization hosted more than 80 events and master classes both locally and nationally. Some of the many notable names who worked alongside membership holders at these events were Steve Lacy, Sabrina Carpenter and Armani White.
