KTSW 89.9

The people of San Marcos had a fun-filled day on April 11, beginning with the 20-year-old tradition of Riverfest and ending the amazing night with some hype beats at San Marcos’ beloved venue, The Porch. River Rave at The Porch was hosted by yours truly, KTSW 89.9, and included four awesome local DJs.
The Porch has been a KTSW 89.9 favorite, being a venue for many events like Third Thursdays and Estrojam, which celebrates Women’s History Month. The small, intimate bar/venue is a great place to hang out and enjoy local music. That night, The Porch came into clutch providing a great, fun space to host River Rave, an “after party” for the craziness that was River Fest.

First up on stage was CABLE! His set consisted of mainly instrumental house music. House music is a genre of electronic music characterized by repetitive danceable beats and was made popular in the late 80s club scene, especially in the queer community. Since then the genre has expanded into many subgenres including Acid House, Diva House, Funky House, and many more.
Since the 80s house music has continued to stay relevant, especially in recent years there seems to have been a revival of house listeners and local DJs spinning house-like beats. Young DJs like CABLE! continue to keep house music in the Texas local scene alive. Follow CABLE! On Instagram @sauswg.

Next up was Radium Girls, bringing up the energy with mixes right out of a 2010 rave. I tracked down their SoundCloud @2radiumgirls after the show and was enjoying their mixes. Radium Girl’s mixes were reminiscent of nostalgic songs especially “Watermelon Thump Queen” which turned Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” into the ultimate rave song. Their other music on SoundCloud is hilarious and uplifting, using unique and quirky sound sampling like a car engine in the song “Ermmm…He’s Right Behind Me Isn’t He”.
The EDM style, short for Electric Dance Music, showed through in Radium Girls’ set at River Rave with funky beats that got the crowd up and dancing to the music. EDM is much like house music and other electronica but tends to remix popular songs, especially 2010s party anthems. Radium Girls did a great job at creating a more unique EDM sound with sound samples you wouldn’t even think about using in a song. I recommend checking them out on SoundCloud, and Instagram @2radiumgirls if you feel like getting turned up with some funky, funny beats as well as going to see them DJ and bring the rave energy.

DJ Brokeboy then Glitcheo were the last DJs to perform, giving the crowd more of the same techno rave beats. Everyone that was still there late into the night was up dancing and jumping to the fun music. This event was DJ Brokeboy’s DJing debut after his EP release this month, titled winner every time under his artist name SAMMY. You can follow DJ Brokeboy on Instagram @sammy.xtreme to keep up with his latest whereabouts.
I felt like I had been transported from the small venue of The Porch into ‘party central’ with Glitcheo’s spunky performances. The last of the crowd was dancing around with major energy to their set. Glitcheo definitely topped off that night with on-par rave energy so make sure to follow Erick on Instagram to follow the Glitcheo journey @lejaniarick.
