On June 21st, 206ONE, a beloved local skateboard brand, gathered the vibrant skateboarding community at the parking lot of Native Blends coffee shop. As dusk settled, the atmosphere crackled with excitement as skaters showcased their skills amidst welcoming cheers and applause from fellow enthusiasts in our San Marcos community. The event not only celebrated the thrill of skating but also fostered a sense of unity and camaraderie among participants.
To give some background, 206ONE is a homegrown skateboarding company founded by Kenley Young, a Texas State University graduate with degrees in public administration and political science. Despite his longtime aspiration to attend law school, Young remained dedicated to his passion for skateboarding. Balancing his legal studies with entrepreneurship, he steadily cultivated 206ONE into a thriving local business.

Adding to the festivities, the event featured an array of enticing vendors offering everything from skate gear to tattoos. Attendees were also treated to dynamic performances by talented local bands such as Maypedal, Swing Sets, Slick, and ladyluck. Maypedal kicked things off with a hard riff that had everyone on their feet. These guys are a three-piece dynamo, and their energy was through the roof. They had the crowd hooked right from the start. Next up, Swing Sets took the stage with their cover of “6L GTR.” Who knew a coffee shop could host a mosh pit? It was wild and definitely a first for me in such a cozy spot. Their set was a blast, and the crowd loved it.

Slick followed, and as always, they were fantastic. Their frontman had everyone singing along. They brought a perfect mix of high-energy and catchy tunes that kept the energy alive. Ladyluck wrapped up the night on a more reflective note. Their music brought a sense of melancholy and unity that was beautiful. By the end, it felt like we’d all been on an emotional rollercoaster together.

206ONE’s Skate Day at Native Blends emerged as a highlight of the local skateboarding calendar, blending adrenaline-pumping tricks with community spirit and artistic expression. The event not only showcased the brand’s commitment to the skating culture but also underscored its role in nurturing a thriving community of skaters and supporters in San Marcos. It was an impressive night showcasing the true talent of San Marcos. From Maypedal’s raw power to ladyluck’s deep emotional pull, it was a night to remember. And who can forget that coffee shop mosh pit? San Marcos, you never fail to surprise!
Reflecting on the event’s success, Young shared, “I’m incredibly excited; the community really showed up tonight. Moving forward, we’ll ramp up our marketing efforts. As a brand representing San Marcos, I hope 206ONE thrives for the next five years, becoming a cornerstone of our community.” For aspiring students, Young advises, “Don’t fear discomfort. Challenges will arise, and it may feel overwhelming, but embrace the uncertainty. Push yourself, try new things, meet new people. Embracing discomfort is crucial for personal growth and moving forward in life.”
