One of the most effective ways to stay focused while studying is through listening to music. According to a study from the University of Maryland Global Campus, people who listen to music, whether casually or for focus, tend to experience higher mental well-being and reduced anxiety.

For those looking to exercise their brain while studying, listening to, or playing music is a powerful tool. It aids in memory recall and cognitive retention, which can be especially beneficial when learning new material. A Stanford University study found that classical music can help students learn and interpret information more easily. By reducing stress and anxiety, music creates a more conducive environment for focus and concentration.

However, not all music is ideal for studying. Music with lyrics or a high intensity might not be the best option for reading or learning unfamiliar material. If you still find it difficult to focus, you might consider alternatives like white noise or other audio options instead of music.

Not only can music improve your mood and motivation, but it can also help you relax, creating a more effective study environment. Classical music is known for being peaceful and harmonious, often cited as one of the best genres for studying due to its calming effect and ability to boost productivity—a phenomenon referred to as the “Mozart Effect.”

Music can be a valuable tool for students of all ages, helping to enhance academic performance. However, since every student has different learning styles and preferences, their choice of music can vary greatly. No matter the genre, whatever music helps you stay focused and feel less stressed, that is the best type of music to study to for you. Everyone has their own study methods and ways to recall information, so playing music you feel most comfortable with will give you the best results towards your goal. Phyllis Medina, PhD, Program Director of Psychology at the University of Maryland Global Campus, advises that “one needs to think about what music they enjoy. For example, traditional classical is not for everyone, but soundtracks from Destiny or Skyrim might do the trick.”

For those who do not enjoy classical music, electronic genres like ambient or new age EDM can be great alternatives. These styles, like classical, often feature minimal or no lyrics, making them conducive to concentration. Mellow jazz music is another excellent option, as it has been shown to boost creativity and reduce stress, which in turn can enhance memory. Even video games or movie soundtracks can help maintain a positive mindset while studying.Instrumental music, which lacks vocals, allows the listener to focus more on the task at hand. Classical pieces by composers like Mozart are entirely instrumental and provide a great backdrop for studying. Switching up music genres during study breaks can also help keep the brain active and prevent boredom. However, it is important to consider the volume of the music. Even calm music can become overpowering if played too loudly through headphones. Finding the right volume can help to maintain focus without becoming a distraction.

Music has a profound impact on emotions, so it is crucial to choose music that keeps you stay in a focused and positive mindset. If a song has creative elements or familiar lyrics, it can easily divert your attention from studying to the music itself. Dr. Masha Godkin, a professor in the Department of Marriage and Family Sciences at National University, explains that “music activates both the left and right brain at the same time, and the activation of both hemispheres can maximize learning and improve memory.”

The key to using music as a study aid is to choose what works best for you. Whether it is classical, electronic, jazz, or even a video game soundtrack, finding the right sound can improve focus, reduce stress, and help you achieve your academic goals. Here is a playlist that helps me stay focused on my schoolwork and maybe some of the songs can help you out too.
