“GUTS”: A Night of Music and Momentum

The start of a new year marks a fresh beginning, not just for personal resolutions but also for music artists eager to embark on new creative journeys. It’s a time of renewed inspiration, where melodies take shape, lyrics come to life, and ambitious projects move from ideas to reality. Whether refining their sound, experimenting with new styles, or gearing up for long-anticipated releases, musicians use this period to set the tone for the months ahead. As the industry awakens with fresh energy, the new year serves as a launchpad for groundbreaking music, setting the stage for an exciting season of artistic evolution and discovery. 

To start the brand-new year, Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, shoegaze band Glare began making announcements for the premier of their first-ever directed music video for their upcoming single, “GUTS,” which took place on Jan. 24. Along with the exclusive showing were performances from Glare themselves as well as Austin-based band, I Wear Your Chain, for their first performance debut. 

The two bands hosted the watch party at Doc’s Drive In Theatre in Buda, Texas for free. Those that were wanting to attend just had to do a simple RSVP. I arrived early, and the turnout was surprisingly small. Members of Glare were also walking around, interacting with fans as they arrived. Whether by having a conversation at the bar or selling merch at a table before the show kicked off. While there, it felt like only true fans were in attendance to give love and support to the rising stars.  

A year before this show, the newly emerging band I Wear Your Chain released their debut EP titled Demo (2024), yet they remained absent from live performances throughout the year. Before attending their set, I took some time to listen to their recordings, curious about the sonic identity they were bringing to the table. Their music carried a distinct grunge-gaze feel, with buzzing bass riffs layered over fast, syncopated drum patterns, creating a raw yet immersive atmosphere. However, what stood out most during their live performance was the contrast between their instrumentation and songwriting. 

 While their sound leaned heavily into grunge-gaze, their choice of major chords and pop-infused lyrics added an unexpected brightness, defying the genre’s typical melancholic tones. Experiencing their music live only amplified its impact—especially in the cold, where the raw energy of their set made it even more captivating. The lead singer’s low-register vocals effortlessly highlighted the melody woven through the lush, reverberating guitars while still allowing the bass to shine through in perfect balance. 

Building on this powerful momentum, Glare took the stage and delivered an electrifying performance, despite the cold weather. Glare’s signature blend of spacy guitar chords, driving drum fills, and deep, resonant basslines kept the crowd moving, creating a warmth that only live music can provide. Throughout their set, they maintained a rich, immersive soundscape, effortlessly balancing heaviness with dreamy, atmospheric tones. The audience responded with enthusiasm after every song, cheering for both nostalgic favorites and unreleased tracks that hinted at the band’s evolving sound. The energy between the performers and the crowd was undeniable, a constant exchange of passion and appreciation. 

Members of Glare reciprocated the love, taking moments between songs to express gratitude—not only to their fans but also to everyone who played a role in making this premiere performance possible. It was more than just a show; it was an unforgettable experience of connection, music, and raw emotion.
