SAN MARCOS — The Black Student Alliance (BSA) at Texas State University is extending its mission of fostering belonging through the B.R.I.D.G.E. initiative, connecting students with career insights and opportunities to network with leading companies.

The B.R.I.D.G.E. initiative, which stands for Building Relationships, Inspiring Dialogue, Generating Empowerment, is designed to help students transition from academic life to the workforce by bridging the gap between education and career opportunities.

“It’s really just the starting place to finding your place or your people at Texas State,” said Rylyne Townsend, president of BSA. “Whether you’re looking for community or professional guidance, B.R.I.D.G.E offers students the opportunity to connect with individuals and companies who can help them navigate their journey.”

The initiative is open to all students, including those who are not members of BSA, offering a unique opportunity to engage with companies, build industry connections, and gain firsthand insights into the professional world.

Jorri Odom, vice president of BSA, emphasized the importance of the initiative in fostering a sense of community and belonging, particularly for students of color.

“It’s not easy to find people that look like you,” said Odom. “So, we’re kind of that starting point for students to find individuals who share the same culture and background.”

Beyond career development, the B.R.I.D.G.E. initiative also plays a key role in challenging stereotypes about the Black community.

“We are essentially a family here, and it’s important to realize that it’s also about breaking stereotypes,” said Odom. “We show people that we actually do the work, we do community service, and we’re willing to make a future for ourselves.”

One of the key goals of the B.R.I.D.G.E. initiative is to introduce students to top-tier companies and organizations, with its first event being a partnership with Google.

“This is a great opportunity for students to apply and show their interests to get a tour of the Google campus and meet employees there,” said Townsend. “It’s an exciting way to expose students to the professional world and open doors that might otherwise feel out of reach. We’re definitely looking to expand on that.”

BSA has already partnered with companies like Something Kitchen and Industry to help sponsor events, but the initiative faces challenges, particularly in securing funding and ensuring long-term sustainability.

Townsend noted that financial support remains a critical factor for growth.

“This changes what we can produce,” said Townsend. “If the school can provide us funding or support for initiatives, that can significantly impact the work we do.”

As part of their outreach, BSA will also visit local schools during Black History Month to engage with children and celebrate the richness of Black culture. This initiative aims to inspire younger students to eventually take on leadership roles within BSA and other campus organizations.

“We want to reach out to younger students and prepare them for the changes ahead,” said Odom. “With everything that happened during the last presidential election, there’s going to be a lot of changes, and we want to help them navigate that.”

The B.R.I.D.G.E. initiative is not only a tool for professional development but also serves as a vital support system for students navigating the challenges of college life and the changing professional landscape.

This approach continues to guide BSA’s work, helping build lasting connections and foster empowerment within the Texas State community.

“We want to express our culture and share what Black history means today,” Townsend said. “It’s an opportunity to push boundaries and encourage the next generation to think critically and make change. We are united in purpose beyond labels.”
