Definitely one for the books the crowd might say. Friday night marked the second live performance hosted by none other than 3thuun productions. As you enter the apartment, what should’ve been a living room… is now a fully transformed DJ booth. With just a simple set up, a pair of Audio-Technicas and mixer, delivered a 45 minute set of unforgettable music far from your average DJ performance.

Mixing behind those turntables was Ethan

McConnell, also known as DJ [R3DACT3D], who curated an all vinyl setlist. From a library of 500 records spanning over multiple genres, each track was intentional.  Knowing his own collection on an intimate level, creating the smoothest transitions all night after taking days of remembering the BPM and key signatures of each track.

Far from any accident, hearing two songs you’d never expect to work together, all harmonically mixed, making it seem as if it was all one singular track. Providing a wide range from Apollo 440’s electro driven hit, “Aint Talkin Bout Dub” to “Aint Seen Nothing” by Lemon D was personally my favorite moment of the night. As you sat there through the set, you would sit there hearing tracks that stood out sonically with provided tracks that aren’t availible on any streaming services. I took the time to ask the disc jockey himself about his setlist to see where and how he chooses these deep cuts.

“When I look for records to spin, I try to look them up online before to see. If I can’t find it, lowkey I still buy it if it just looks interesting.”

Overall, Ethuun McConnell is someone you must see perform in San Marcos given the chance.  The chemistry between DJ and crowd members was reciprocal from start to finish with Ethuun dancing in between tracks and interacting with everyone. With this being his second official show, it’s clear his ambition and talent prove he’s here to keep the record spinning
