There’s something electric about finding a band right as they’re figuring out who they are. That’s exactly what it felt like the first time I saw Cuerno TX, a hardcore group that formed in 2024 and has already become one of the most exciting acts in the local scene.

A photo of the band, Cuerno TX, taken with a wide lens. Two members squat in the foreground with their hands outstretched to the camera. The other two sit on the bed of a truck.

The band is made up of  Leonardo Saldivar  on vocals, Michael Flores  on guitar, Jack Furbee  on drums, and  Desarey Elizondo Lopez, who joined as the bassist in August of 2025. Even though they’re still early in their journey, they’ve already performed at several Texas venues, including The Marc, Chess Club, Austin Tunnels, the San Marcos Skate Park, Private Park, and Night 1 of Central Texas Metal Fest at Jack’s Roadhouse.

Right now, Cuerno TX has two official songs out: “The Dogs Are Barking in Texas” and their self-titled track “Cuerno.” What I love most about seeing them live is that some of their songs are improvised. It gives every show a different energy, and there’s something creative and fearless about a band willing to do that so early on.

The members said they draw inspiration from groups like Jesus Piece and Knuckle Sandwich. They also draw on cultural influences from artists like Lie and Manos de Fiero as they continue to shape a sound that reflects their identity.

I had the honor of seeing them perform, and they’re insane in the best way. Beyond being talented musicians, they’re genuinely good people, and that always stands out to me. Their stage presence is one of the strongest parts of who they are right now. When I saw them at the Tunnels, their energy filled the whole space. They were jumping, two-stepping, getting involved with the crowd, and completely owning the room without it ever feeling forced or overwhelming. It made me think, “Wow, these guys are gonna be huge.”

I also asked each band member to share a song that would be their personal anthem:

  • Jack  chose “Wonderboy” by Tenacious D: “Cause it makes me feel like I have superpowers.”
  • Leo  chose “Ace” by Descendents: “because it’s about not letting life pass by, it talks about how now is the time to do something you want to do, which is something I like live by.”
  • Des  chose “Twice I Tried” by Catalyst: “I really like the raw and energetic sound, and it’s a song I listen to before our shows to hype myself up.”
  • Michael  chose “Pressure to Succeed” by Turnstile: “Because I am very scared and doubtful sometimes of my ability to succeed in the things I want to do, but l am super cool anyway. And I do everything super awesome.”

Cuerno TX is still shaping themselves, but there’s something real and exciting happening with them. They’re working hard, they’re intentional about their identity, and they perform like they already understand the weight of what they’re building. If they keep going the way they are now, their future looks extremely bright.
