Whether or not you’ve built a strategy guide for attacking this year’s festivities, don’t worry. I’m here to guide you through all the not-so-normal, dynamic, must-see acts rolling into town in just a few short days. 

This year, I’m really taking it upon myself to try new things. Exit my comfort zone, and take a risk when it comes to listening to music, and I’m here to encourage you to do the same. 

If you’re tired of feeling stuck in endless loops of listening to the same material over and over, or selecting a playlist for the millionth time because you don’t know what else to do, allow me to introduce you to some new artists you’ve never had the pleasure of meeting, until now. 

I offer you two states of being. Reflective and Reflexive. You pick the one that resonates with you the most.

Reflective

Maybe you’ve been feeling reserved. Life’s got you down, and you’re looking for a little sliver of calm amidst all the festival chaos. Maybe you find yourself more inclined to sounds that make you think a little bit harder and feel a whole lot deeper. If that’s you, you’ll want to check these artists out.

Amor Vincit Omnia 

A duo from Iceland, making waves overseas, will be gracing SXSW with their presence. Taking inspiration from artists such as Björk and Kate Bush, Amor Vincit Omnia finds excitement in pushing the bounds of pop music, while offering a charming Icelandic sense of carelessness. 

Atsuko Chiba 

A genre-crossing post-rock-happening all the way from Montreal, Canada, Atsuko Chiba weaves together hypnotic sounds with angular riffing, leaving listeners entranced and satisfied. For fans of a good build-up and emotionally explosive ending. 

Marissa Nadler

From Knoxville, Tennessee, ethereal folk singer Marissa Nadler performs Americana ballads with a haunting allure. Inspired by spectral beauty and lush storytelling, Nadlar paints vivid pictures in the minds of listeners with her mezzo-soprano voice and finger-style guitar.

Kety Fusco

An electro-acoustic harpist and composer extraordinaire, Kety Fusco from Lausanne, Switzerland, has redefined the harp in contemporary music. Using various electronic components and pedals, Fusco transforms the instrument into an expressive voice that shakes, whispers, and thrums with emotion. 

Batry Powr

Hundred Waters frontwoman Nicole Miglis from Chicago, Illinois, is Batry Powr. Using battery-powered instruments to explore long-form meditation music, Miglis invites listeners to breathe and enjoy the soothing sounds of electric and acoustic blended bliss. 

REFLEXIVE

As opposed to reflective, maybe you’re feeling tense. Riled up with displaced emotion. Maybe you’re feeling restless and simply need to flex your muscles. If so, here are some artists to get the blood pumping. 

YARD

Electropunk from Dublin, Ireland, will leave you feeling sweaty and slightly unnerved. Mixing electronica and post-punk, YARD is loud, cathartic, and unapologetically brazen. 

The Game Shop

An electro-rock band from Nishinomiya, Japan, The Game Shop is Kimito and McD. Influenced by both club and rock scenes, The Game Shop blends genres and implements musical and cultural influences from around the world. 

Fleshripper

An old school death metal project straight out of Austin, Texas, Fleshripper features members of Portrayal of Guilt. 

P.H.0

Intense metal riffs and modulated synths mixed with the sound of the traditional Chinese Erzhu come together to create a chaotic, dystopian soundscape. P.H.0 from NYC transforms ancient Taoist traditions into ravable soundscapes that defy time. 

Slash Need

Known for their live theatrics and metallic style of techno and EBM, Slash Need is the most talked about touring act from Toronto, ON, Canada. Utilizing the essence of grit and raw physicality, Slash Need invites listeners to DEMAND MORE.
