SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State defeats non conference opponent UTRGV, 8 to 7, after an Austin Munguia slide to home plate.

The Vaqueros came into Texas State 13 and 8 on the season, the Bobcats swept SBC foe Louisiana last weekend to improve their regular season record to 16 and 8.

This game was an all Spanish broadcast for KTSW, a first of its kind. Broadcasting was “Dino” Chiecchi, a professor at Texas State, along with some students from the department of Journalism.

The game started with an early run from UTRGV, Armani Raygoza singled to the right side of the field which resulted in Thomas Williams scoring to start things off for the Vaqueros.

UTRGV also scored in the top of 2nd after a Rudy Gonzales double, it led to Diego Villescas scoring a run.

The score was 3-0 for the entire 3rd inning. In the 4th, Dawson Park was next at bat where he hit a homer to center field. Then, Ethan Farris recorded an RBI when Jaquae Stewart crossed the plate to make the score 3-2.

Bottom of the 5th, Rashawn Galloway hits a double, which results in Chase Mora and Jackson Cotton scoring, giving Texas State the lead, 4-3.

In the 7th Chase Mora scored after a Jackson Cotton homer, increasing their lead 7-4.

They would hold onto this lead until the top of the 9th where UTRGV scored 3 runs to tie the game.

In the bottom of the 9th, Clayton Nampken singles to reach base. Austin Munguia came in to pinch run for Nampken then stole second on a wild pitch. Brady Boles then hit a single which resulted in Munguia sliding to home for the win.

Head Coach Steven Trout was asked about pitcher Wade Cooper who closed out the game for the Bobcats.

“He did a great job of getting back into the moment, and understanding that was a bad inning, and made the pitches that allowed our team to come back” said Trout.

Brady Boles said he was feeling confident heading into the batters box, but just wanted to put the ball in play.

“Good things happen when put the ball in play, tried not to do too much, just stick to my approach” said Boles.

The Bobcats will be starting their series away against Georgia State this Friday.
