Good City Modern at Tantra

On September 11th, Good City Modern played a show at Tantra, right off the San Marcos Square. Good City Modern is a band based in San Antonio, Texas. They’ve been releasing music since 2019, and they’re signed to their own independent record label. Good City Modern is an Alternative Rock band heavily inspired by Pantera. Some of the band’s top songs are: “Idle”, “MFB”, and “Bad Day”. Personally, I would recommend “MFB” and “Love Me”.

When I stumbled into Tantra on Friday night, it was by complete accident. My boyfriend and I had a movie marathon planned, and we wanted to get some caffeine in preparation, so we stopped by Tantra. My boyfriend got a Cafe Eclair cold brew, and I got a Flower Power latte with oat milk. I highly recommend both drinks; they were both delicious! As we took our drinks to the patio, we noticed Good City Modern setting up instruments and other equipment. Intrigued, we decided to stick around for their show.

It took the band a second to get the soundboard set up as they wanted, but they started playing around 7:30pm. Before this show, I was unfamiliar with Good City Modern, but almost immediately I became captured by the band’s sound. Even though the stage was outside, Good City Modern filled the space with sound.

In between songs, the lead singer gave some insight on whatever the following song was. Whether it be what the song was inspired by, what the energy of the song was, or who the song was about, the lead singer always had an anecdote to share. I really like when musicians give context about their music, so it’s no surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed when Good City Modern’s lead singer shared widely unknown information about the band’s songs.

Good City Modern also chose a good variety of songs for their set. Some of the songs were on the sadder, more emotional end of the spectrum, and other songs were on the happier, “get up and dance” end of the spectrum. The band also did a good job at spacing out the more emotional songs so as not to have a depressing show. Good City Modern finished their set with quite a few upbeat, dancy songs which left a residual smile on the crowd’s face. During this string of joyful songs, the bassist even jumped off stage and danced with fans in the crowd!

As Good City Modern’s last note of the show was fading out, raindrops started to fall. It’s almost as if the band’s music was the only thing keeping the rain at bay. My boyfriend and I both thoroughly enjoyed our time watching and listening to Good City Modern. As the band finished their set, we applauded, and the very second the ending note finished, we ran to the car so we didn’t get stuck in the starting rainstorm.
