Why you need to be at the next Third Thursday

Third Thursday concluded with enough energy to last until the next. The Porch once again hosted the event, with the band Building 8 kicking off the night at 10 pm and Burnadine finishing it off by midnight. As my first Third Thursday event, I will be bringing as many people as I can to experience the next. 

Building 8 started as I began to table with KTSW. After a couple of sound checks, the band began their first song. Immediately, I could feel their authenticity and love within their group from the booth I was sitting in. Although I had trouble viewing the band from my position, I couldn’t keep myself still while their alternative rock blasted throughout the venue. From what I could see, the case was the same for the rest of the crowd. Even the people by themselves in the corner couldn’t help bopping their heads. 

This was Building 8’s first time performing at a Third Thursday, which is something their group has been aiming to do for years. They mentioned how much of an absolute honor it was for them to be there that night, and they made sure every moment was filled with sound that people would enjoy well after the night. 

Their presence was definitely strong, with some points of the show having the ride cymbal completely combatting my hearing ability, but I found myself enjoying that vibrant energy. With all the energy that was exuding from the vocalist, it was hard to tell she had an 8 am class the next morning.  

After finishing my shift tabling with KTSW at the venue, I made my way into the crowd. Either someone was constantly moshing inches from the stage, or someone was taking in the music and turning it into smooth dances, as it was impossible not to want to get up and move.  

Burnadine had some of the coolest energy from an emerging band in the local scene who was keen on keeping their image known. Every so often, they would mention their previous album, Nobody Should, but Everybody Does, in the most on-air radio voice possible, which easily stuck in my mind after the show.  

Once the music began, the lead vocalist threw herself into the song and gave a performance for a crowd a hundred times the size of that night. It was as if the air attempted to drag them down while they fought to stay on stage and keep a performance. With the occasional ad-libs in her radio voice and the appearances of a bubble gun at the right times, the time between songs felt more like being inside of a record itself moving from song to song rather than waiting for each piece to begin separately. 

As the last song reached its end, Navi, the lead vocalist, grabbed a bubble gun and jumped into the crowd before taking a journey across the entire venue, bringing color to every corner. Of all the people I encountered that night, not one expected to miss the next event.
