“In Your Dreams” Stevie Nicks gets real

Step into the studio with Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks, 70’s rock’n’roll muse, voice, and songwriter. “In Your Dreams:Stevie Nicks” directed by Dave Stewart and Nicks, documents the making of Nick’s most recent album In Your Dreams, her first in ten years.

Nicks graced the red carpet with director Stewart for the SXSW premiere of “In Your Dreams : Stevie Nicks,” and participated in a Q&A session with attendees afterwards.

While many regard Nicks as a muse herself, Nicks believes she is always chasing the music muse, saying the documentary is close to her heart because it emphasizes her life choices.

“I did decide to not get married and I did decide to not have children so that I could follow this muse and not be tied down to anyone or anything which would stop me from the muse of writing songs and doing what I wanted to do,” Nicks said.

Indeed, Stewart refers to Nicks as “the ultimate multi-tasker” in this clip I got of the two of them during the Q&A.

Nicks said she knew of her passion to be in the music industry and felt confident of her commitment early on.

“As a woman, if you’re married or have a boyfriend – some people can do it,” Nicks said. “I didn’t really feel like I could do it and I didn’t really want to do it because I knew at 15 years old that this (music) is what I wanted to do.”

“In Your Dreams” perfectly depicts the passion and dedication that can go into the making of a record; the documentary also explores the reasons Nicks decided to come back and make a new, independent record after years of solo and namely Fleetwood Mac albums to sing along to (not that Mac is not hair-shaking worthy because, well, of course). The documentary is worth checking out for its portrayal of both a sense of nostalgia and a sense of rebirth in Nick’s career that is edgy and inspiring.

Nicks also appeared with Dave Grohl on stage at SXSW music, playing in their new band Sound City Players consisting of other music greats such as Lee Ving and Rick Springfield.
