    Flooding San Marcos Hannah Cramer

Last Thursday, many students woke up to emergency alerts about flash flood warnings in San Marcos. Over night, the city of San Marcos received over nine inches of rain leaving Sewell Park and Aquarena Springs flooded. Although Texas State classes weren’t cancelled, some professors cancelled class on their own and all of San Marcos Consolidated ISD campuses were closed. Jason Gossett, assistant superintendent of business and support services for San Marcos CISD discusses why all of San Marcos public schools were closed.

That morning we had crews already out and about driving about 4:15 in the morning and with the flood waters coming in from Wimberley and so many road closings it was just in the best interest of the school district for the safety of our students and staff to just go ahead and cancel that day.
– Jason Gossett

San Marcos CISD will make up the day lost by holding classes on a bad-weather make up day in late May or early June. Gossett says no buildings were damaged but some are experiencing leaks. Since the storm early Thursday morning, the Red Cross of Central Texas has served more than 10-thousand meals, provided more than 300 health service checks, and registered more than 500 individuals at the Flood Assistance Center. The Red Cross shelter at Dove Springs Rec Center is still open for anyone whose home was affected by the storm. Sewell Park river levels are still higher than usual but the river is no longer flooded and Aquarena Springs is safe to drive on.
