Texas State University has received word from the Employees Retirement System of Texas that employees can now enroll a same-sex spouse and dependent(s) in the Group Benefits Program.
Following the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on June 26, 2015 that same-sex couples can now be legally married throughout the nation, today is the first day any state agency and higher education employee can apply for benefits on behalf of their same-sex spouses and dependents.
For already existing same-sex marriages that took place in other states, the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing those marriages in Texas will be considered a Qualifying Life Event.
The QLE period, in which someone can enroll a same-sex spouse and/or dependent is June 26 – July 25, 30 days after the Supreme Court ruling.
For marriages occurring on and after June 26, 2015, the standard QLE period, 30 days following the marriage, will apply.
Today, The University of Texas and Texas A&M will also begin the benefits application program.
For Texas State University, The Benefits staff in Human Resources is available to assist as needed and may be reached at (512) 245-2557 or e-mail hr@txstate.edu.
