A San Marcos man who drowned in the San Marcos river earlier Wednesday morning has been identified.
The victim, Daniel Hannon, 80, was tubing near the Children’s Park with family members when his sister-in-law fell out of her tube. Hannon left his tube to help assist her in getting back into her tube.
Officials report Hannon telling her that he was already tired, then attempted to swim back and get into his own tube, which had floated to the opposite side of the river.
His sister-in-law and nephew were then separated by the current, where Hannon’s family members waited for him downstream on the bridge to the island at Rio Vista Park between 10-15 minutes before calling police at 11:14 a.m. to report him missing.
San Marcos police officers, firefighters, park rangers and the San Marcos/Hays County EMS searched the river for him but had no success.
As the search continued, a man with snorkeling and assisting in the search found Hannon underwater and caught in debris between the bank and pylon of the railroad trestle crossing the San Marcos river.
At approximately 12:40 p.m. a diver from the San Marcos Area Recovery Team recovered Hannon.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
