For Mass Communication week, many guest speakers are offering their expert opinions and insight on the world of media.
One way to help improve communications is studying the demographics of the public. State of Texas demographer, Dr. Lloyd Potter, explains what demographics can reveal.
“Having some understanding of an audience, and what their characteristics are, and how they consume media, what kinds of things they’re likely to be interested in, are all gonna be a function of some of their demographic and socioeconomic characteristics.”
Knowing the diversity of regions can offer insight into an audience and create a better understanding of how to communicate information. Dr. Potter explains how demographics is intertwined with mass communication.
“Without question, if somebody’s interested in communicating with an audience, having some understanding of their racial and ethnic characteristics, sex, age, education, the kinds of jobs they have, their income, having that kind of information is key to being effective in crafting and delivering messages to people.”
In terms of mass communication, demographics attempts to put audiences into perspective. Once an understanding of the audience is established, mass communication becomes an even more powerful tool.
