When you think about who are the top tier programs in college baseball, The University of Texas probably comes in mind.

Head coach Augie Garrido has been on the Longhorn staff since 1997 and has brought them two national championships. Overall, Garrido has five championships with two teams and has been to the College World Series 15 times in his long career. His championship pedigree coaching was here, in San Marcos, last night and Garrido had a lot of good things to say about Texas State after the Longhorns 10-4 win over the Bobcats in 11 innings.

“I think they are a very fine baseball team. The one inning and the loss doesn’t change the quality of the game that was played for the first nine innings. It was toe-to-toe and they executed very well,” said Garrido. “ If you take away the last inning that went out of control, I thought they played real well.”

Texas State was in it the whole game tying it up at 4 in the 8th inning and nearly pulling it out in the 9th inning when they had the bases loaded with one out. The Bobcats failed to capitalize on the opportunity, as back to back groundouts ended the inning. Then in the top of the 11th inning, the Longhorns were able to get six runs to pull off the 10-4 victory.

Coach Garrido also had some word about Texas State head coach Ty Harrington.

“Ty is a great coach and his staff is really good. They will benefit from losing,” said Garrido. “Both teams will benefit from this game.”

This will not be the only time these two teams will meet during the season. They will meet two more times and both of those games will be in Austin at Disch Falk Field on April 26th and also on May 17th.
