KTSW 89.9 had the pleasure of attending Mala Luna in San Antonio on Oct. 29 and 30.The festival grounds, hosted at The Lone Star Brewery, saw nearly 30,000 attendees, resulting in a sold-out inaugural two-day weekend for Mala Luna. Headliners Travis Scott and Kaskade blew the minds of festival goers, who came dressed to impress with cool fashion and costumes in the spirit of Halloween and Dia de los Muertos.
Mala Luna isn’t the festival for traditional hip-hop enthusiasts or sticklers. Featured performers were mostly of a newer wave of rap that the kids are into nowadays (which could explain the remarkable number of chaperones we found hanging around the food spots and drink lines.) Some of our favorite performances included Lil Yachty, Jeezy, Sango, Rae Sremmurd and Kehlani. There was an interesting mix of EDM artists who didn’t seem to be the main attraction for most of the crowd, but we still enjoyed all of the performances. Mala Luna was a success and we’re interested to see the direction the festival will take after its first year.
