Coffee is one of the most precious resources for college students, no matter how cliche that sounds. I’ve already needed gallons of the all-powerful drink to stay awake while studying late at night, and even when I’m not studying I find myself craving it.
Making coffee at home can be a drag when there are so many great coffee shops in San Marcos. Photo by Alisa Pierce.
Thankfully, San Marcos is rich with cool coffee shops to check out. If you’re looking to find a new shop to try out, here’s a list of my favorite coffee shops in San Marcos.
Mochas & Javas
Mochas & Javas has four locations in San Marcos, but I spend most of my time at the one on LBJ Drive, which is near campus. The shop is a favorite of Texas State students, so it’s not unusual to find most of campus there taking a study break. It never feels overcrowded, however, and the coffee is so good that it’s no wonder so many students visit.
Tantra Coffee House
Tantra has been a favorite of mine since I moved to San Marcos. Its indie feel shines brightly through the amount of local paintings hanging in the shop, as well as the outside sitting area which often has amatuer artists singing a song or two. The coffee is delicious, but I prefer their hot chocolate.
Wake the Dead Coffee House
Wake the Dead is a gothic coffee house which often hosts KTSW’s Underground Excellence events. The shop has a lot of room to hang out in, as well as signature drinks and snacks. Similarly to Tantra, I usually get the hot chocolate here, but the coffee and brownies are just as tasty.
Jo On the Go
Jo On the Go isn’t as well known as a few others on this list, but it’s still a favorite for some of San Marcos’ residents. The coffee shop has a variety of delicious food, such as sandwiches and smoothies. The shop even delivers, so there’s no reason not to try it out.
Stellar Cafe
Stellar Cafe is a very chill coffee shop. It isn’t as popular as others in San Marcos, so it at times is overshadowed. However, the shop offers interesting signature drinks such as the Cat’s Meow and the Lucky Latte, as well as a quiet place to study.
