Sunburnt skin and tired feet, MR Fest reached the last few minutes of daylight as it came closer to the grand finale and final venue to wrap up a remarkable day. The Marc is designated for My Radio Festival’s headliners, High Waisted. According to their website, they seem to announce their music as “New York surf band with pop sensibility.” Although it was my first time at MR Fest and at The Marc, the crowds energy was making me feel right at home.
Closing the day from the largest venue of MR Fest, The Marc, is notorious for providing San Marcos with shows that bring big headliners such as Waka Flocka Flame, Riff Raff, Borgore, A$AP Ferg and even Travis Scott. Though this isn’t the first San Marcos has seen High Waisted, high expectations were set for me since it would be my first visit to The Marc and first ever, MR Fest. When I know that I’m going to see a specific band perform, I usually like to come prepared and check out their work beforehand so that I know what I’m getting myself into. Briefly hearing their album, I could see why GQ named them the “best party band” as they highly promote every show like it was a party. Even though many took breaks from the sun to cool down today, it seemed that all attendees gathered for the finale to celebrate the end of another successful and celebratory 10th annual MR Fest.
High Waisted entered the stage in a line formation as they approached their instruments. In sparkly shoes and blue and pink hair, lead vocals and guitar player, Jessica Louise Dye, introduced the band and their first song, Door, set the mood as everyone started jumping to the tempo and grabbing a dance partner. “I’ve been waiting all day for High Waisted to play The Marc because it’s my favorite venue in The Square,” exclaimed David, a Texas State University sophomore and first year MR Fest attendee. Their song, Shithead, began to play as balloons began to fall from the second floor and he quickly jumped back into the dance pit. Everyone did what anyone would do with balloons falling from the sky; nudge it across your friend’s head to make their hair stand with static. The music was exactly as advertised, rock with a twist of electric surf and just the right rhythm to dance along to. After the show, you could see pleasantly satisfied faces all around.
My Radio Festival brought many genres together through out the day providing people with new talent, friends and memories. While High Waisted was new to my ears, I quickly realized why they were chosen to close up the night. And just like that, the long awaited, electrifying 10th annual My Radio Festival had ended. Until next year!
