As a college town, San Marcos has never been short on fast food joints and restaurants. However, it might seem more difficult to eat in this city if you are a vegetarian, vegan, or just trying to be a little bit healthier. Meat and diary are the main entrees on the majority of restaurants, but there are some great places you can go to that have veggie-friendly options that will satisfy your taste buds just as much, if not more. Below, I have listed a few of the places that I love to go to when I need a quick bite.
Buzz Mill Coffee
This coffee house is right off of the Square and is open 24 hours! Whether you are craving breakfast or a nice, juicy burger, Buzz Mill caters to everyone’s diets. If you have been looking for a local eatery, this is the perfect option to throw in your go-to destinations. The great food isn’t the only attribute they have to offer; inside of the building is a chill environment with a cool theme of outdoorsy decor. If you head to the back of Buzz Mill, you may be able to catch some live music at their stage set up!

Pieology
This eatery is one of the most authentic places in San Marcos because it allows customers to make their own pizzas. They give you a variety of toppings to choose from, and you can watch as each topping is placed on your customized pie. Some of my favorite toppings include the vegan mozzarella cheese, spinach, jalapeños, and sun dried tomatoes.
Gil’s Broiler
Looking for a burger place, but are unable to find one that sells veggie patties? Take the time to head over to Gil’s Broiler and you will not regret it. The veggie burgers are a little more expensive, but definitely worth it. Remove cheese and mayo to make it vegan, and add mushrooms and avocado if you want more veggies. You also can make it into a meal and get sweet potato or regular fries on the fries, but that is not even the best part of this restaurant. Manskee rolls, huge cinnamon rolls, are the staple of Gil’s. They are delicious, cheap, and vegan! These are also a must try.
Nostimo Mediterranean Café
With endless options, Nostimo is the most vegan-friendly restaurant in San Marcos. Homemade hummus with pita bread, falafel burgers, and veggie dolma are just some vegan dishes served. Almost every other dish can be made vegan by removing feta cheese and meat. If great Greek food is what you are looking for, this is the place you want to eat at.
Please be aware that there are far more veggie-friendly locations in San Marcos then that are listed here! There are a few food trucks that include meatless dishes on their menus as well. Venture out to find your favorite veggie-friendly dish and share your finds with us!
