Since it’s summer, most of us aren’t trying to wear a full face of makeup when it feels like 100 degrees outside. Sweating off makeup isn’t a cute look and I can assure you it doesn’t feel nice either. That’s why I’m going to share five essential makeup tips that everyone should be doing this summer!

Wear sunscreen.

Texas heat is no joke. If the sun is out, wear sunscreen. If it’s cloudy, wear sunscreen. Sunscreen is super important in protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. There are many ways to wear sunscreen you just have to find what is the best match for you.

You can wear sunscreen underneath your makeup or purchase a moisturizer that has built-in SPF. There are even tinted moisturizers with SPF that work great! According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer once in their lifetime. So it’s super important to protect your skin whenever you’re in the sun! Here’s a list of recommended sunscreens from dermatologists.

Purchase a powerhouse face primer.

A face primer is an important part in a makeup routine. Yet, you don’t have to spend money on a high end primer when you can easily find a cheaper alternative at the drugstore. Maybelline and NYX Makeup have great face primers for a low price. Having an effective primer, will ensure that your makeup stays on through hot weather and sweat. Primers also help blur pores and smooth out textured skin.

Experiment with vibrant colors.

I’ll admit that I am a neutral Nellie (I tend to only wear soft nudes and browns). But the summer season offers the chance to play with bright colors like yellow, purples and oranges. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color because that’s what makeup is — a form of expression.

If you’re looking for an eyeshadow palette that’s fun and vibrant I highly recommend the Alyssa Edwards x Anastasia Beverly Hills, available at Ulta and Sephora. This palette is super versatile and fun with bright colors for day and night.

Finish with a setting spray.

Whether you’re going to be inside or outside set your makeup with setting spray. Setting sprays will help to keep your makeup on longer and looking freshly applied. There are even setting sprays that have sunscreen to offer another layer of protection. Setting sprays help the makeup stick to your face and they feel super refreshing once you spritz it on! I recommend using any Urban Decay setting spray, they have the best selection.

Blast your favorite summer jams while you’re doing your makeup.

This tip is my absolute favorite! Whenever I do my makeup I need to have my jams playing. I might bust out some dance moves and lip sync in front of the mirror but it makes me feel ready to take on the day or night. Right now I’m jamming to the new song from Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello. Before a night out, play your favorite songs while you’re getting ready and have fun!

These tips will help keep your makeup looking freshly applied and long-wearing. I plan on following these tips this entire summer and I hope you will too!
