Mala Luna is a festival in San Antonio, Texas that features hip-hop and R&B music. This year Mala Luna is taking place on October 26 and 27 at Nelson Wolff Stadium. There will be some big names in hip-hop as well as smaller artists, including a few local artists from San Antonio. Mala Luna will also have many local vendors selling food, treats and crafts.
A portion of proceeds from the festival go towards a charity called Miracle League of San Antonio. This foundation gives special needs kids a chance to play baseball and have fun on an organized team.
This year, the lineup holds several exciting big names, such as Miguel, Juice WRLD, Playboi Carti, and Diplo alongside some up-and-coming names like Megan Thee Stallion and DaBaby. Most of the smaller artists were ones I have never heard of before, but now that I’ve given them a listen, I’m eager to see them live! Here’s who I’m most excited to see.
Honestly, I don’t know how anybody could not be ecstatic to see Miguel. With his mellow voice and smooth sound, his music could make anyone melt. His collaborations with other artists helped him gain popularity early in his career, and now he has partnered with many different musicians, such as Mariah Carey, A$AP Rocky, and Mac Miller, on gold and platinum albums. I just know that his set is going to be incredible. I imagine beautiful lighting, a lot of smoke from the smoke machines and a whole bunch of people in the crowd getting in their feelings!
I only discovered Ari Lennox when I saw her name on the lineup, but I have fallen in love. She has a bit of a mix of R&B and jazz styles to her music, and her voice is perfectly strong, soulful and beautiful.
I’ve been a fan of Juice WRLD since his single “Lucid Dreams” took off in 2018. Since then, he has been nominated for several awards, like Song of Summer for “Lucid Dreams” (MTV Video Music Awards), Best New Hip Hop Artist (BET Hip-Hop Awards), and won the award in 2019 for Best New Artist (Billboard Music Awards). He has collaborated with many other artists as well, with other rappers like Ski Mask the Slump God, Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert as well as pop artists like Halsey and Ellie Goulding. Juice WRLD has a wide range of genres that he works with. He has a voice full of emotion and passion for the subject he is singing about, making it easy to sing along and feel every emotion that Juice WRLD is trying to convey in his songs.
Alaina Castillo is an 18-year-old artist from Houston, Texas. Her captivating falsetto voice paired with silky instrumentals makes for a sound that is impressive for such a young, new artist. Her lyrics portray what she feels as a teenage girl and gives us all an insight into her life. You’ll definitely want to keep tabs on Castillo and remember her name as she grows in popularity.
Megan Thee Stallion
Another Houston native on the lineup is none other than Megan Thee Stallion! She broke out in popularity over this past summer when she released her single “Hot Girl Summer,” which inspired a whole movement in women who wanted to be more like Megan, free and expressive. One thing not music-related that I think is admirable about Megan is that she is currently enrolled in school while touring and recording music. She’s smart, talented and beautiful– a commendable trio. I can’t wait to see her in action!
This lineup has many people pumped up for Mala Luna. It’s going to be lively for sure, and you won’t want to miss it. Every person on the lineup, well-known or not, brings something unique to the table and they are going to impress all of us attending.
