Given the global pandemic, most of us are confined to our homes for the summer. Classes are ending soon and students will have to find other things to occupy their time. The following are some ideas of how to spend your summer indoors productively.

Start a hobby

Everyone has a hobby they’ve always wanted to pick up yet haven’t. Now is the time! Whether it’s learning a new language, drawing, or writing, the next few months could be dedicated to properly exploring and developing interests instead of spending hours browsing social media. In truth quarantine is probably the best time to learn a new skill with a lot more free time to focus on personal development.

Meet friends… virtually

Who says you can’t still party during quarantine? Since social distancing I’ve witnessed some of the most unique virtual gatherings, including picnics and birthdays connected through Zoom. It’s important to maintain contact with friends, whether it’s face to face or on Facetime. Scheduling a date with friends, and planning an activity like a hobby or game to do will boost morale and improve your mood.

Exercise

Confinement to the inside is no excuse for not exercising. More than ever people must account for their down time with physical activity. Exercise will not only pass the time, but stimulates the release of dopamine through the body which makes one happier and gives extra energy for the rest of the day. Start every day with a 20 minute exercise to add that extra kick to a productive day.

Cook

If you’re going to be home all day, might as well get familiar with the kitchen. The excuse of a busy schedule can no longer hold you back. Now is the time to make any dish you’ve been meaning to try out. Cooking from home is not only inexpensive, but generally healthier and also fun to learn. There is no need to limit the exploration to just food either, with plenty of interesting drink recipes such as smoothies and coffees available online.

Get a job

If you are not at risk, a summer job is still an option. Essential workers are needed everywhere from grocery stores to delivery. Many students have already taken this time to find temporary jobs and save up this summer. To help, set a financial objective to either get big payments done or plan for activities and trips once quarantine is over.

To stay motivated, set goals for what you want to accomplish this summer. It might be picking up a new hobby, reaching out to old friends, working on health, or saving up for future endeavors, but all will keep you on track with your future. This time in quarantine does not have to be wasted, and good things can come out of this time spent in isolation.
