“Would you please turn on the night light?” Seven-year-old me asked my mother this after she tucked me into bed and was about to leave my room. I had one reason most children have for doing this: scared of ghosts.
Now I, as an adult, am still scared but skeptical. However, I don’t use an energy bill-racking light bulb to face it. I just deal with it like a man. My belief system has changed. I think ghosts are “real,” they are just…physics and not some imaginary “monster” a child would imagine them as. You just got to have this feeling that there’s a presence and they DO happen. Here is a list of my personal accounts.
Franklin Hotel: Deadwood, South Dakota –June 2011
My family and I were traveling with a Chinese travel agency-led tour in the Western United States starting from Denver, Colo. We took tour buses and visited Yellowstone National Park and other amazing sites.
At one point, our tour group stayed at the historic Franklin Hotel for a night in Deadwood. The group chose to stop by Deadwood because of how significant the town was with its Wild West background. My “encounter” happened when I was walking back to the room from the vending machine. I heard footsteps behind me. Of course, I’d assume it is another person going in the same direction, but when I turned around, no one was there.
That was in the middle of the hallway and the closest room was far so there’s no way someone would move that fast to their room.
Train Station: Guangzhou, China—January 2019
My mom and I were getting ready to travel back to Shanghai by train after a wonderful stay in Guangzhou. We were eating ramen at the station when a man sat in front of us. This man looked almost exactly like my deceased uncle. He had the same bald head, same facial feature and same behavior. I didn’t tell him because I didn’t want to make everything awkward.
So I sat there and watched him drink beer and munch on his “dinner” which was literally turkey legs. When it was time to board the train, I noticed he “disappeared” like there was no way he just bypassed heavy security to leave the station.
Of course, a good reason was that he just walked away and China is a densely-populated country. However, I never saw that man on the train OR in the small terminal we were in. Since then, I thought to myself: did I just witness my uncle’s apparition?
My Bedrooms: Texas, USA—May/August 2019
It was a relaxing spring season. I finished my second semester of sophomore year and celebrated by staying up late a lot. One particular night, however, I went downstairs for an “early-morning snack” at 2 A.M. When I went back to bed at three, I could not sleep for a full hour. It was past 4 A.M. when I kind of dozed off. The whole time I was awake? I felt like I was being watched.
Fast-forward to August, I had moved into my old apartment and the first night’s rest wasn’t easy. I woke up abnormally early at around 4 A.M. I had this weird nightmare: I was a Union soldier in the American Civil War. In that dream, a Confederate zombie soldier and I went into hand-to-hand combat. That woke me up and I felt that ghost presence again. I couldn’t sleep after that and just got up for the day.
Ghosts are there for people to wonder. Whether you believe in them or not, they are a symbol of Halloween. Shows like The Othersiders and Ghost Adventures still creeps me out, the latter especially. Of course, I don’t believe everything I see on TV. I have experienced some situations where there seems to be a supernatural presence. In the end, we’d never know about whether they REALLY “exist” or not.
