The 65th Annual Grammy Awards nominated some of the most influential artists of the year. Some of the biggest artists came home with awards and so did smaller artists that are just getting their foot in the door. Records were broken that night including Beyonce who has earned the most Grammy Awards ever with a total of 32 awards, as well as the most nominations one, has ever received. These nominations were given to just a fraction of the momentous artists that exist in 2023 and even the underdogs seemed to win awards at the awards ceremony.
Starting off with Record of the Year which was taken home by Lizzo and her record, About Damn Time. Lizzo was up against folk superstar, Brandi Carlile and her record “You And Me On The Rock”. Carlile’s song is amazing both lyrically and instrumentally and if you’re searching for the perfect feel-good folk song, this one’s for you. Carlile won her 9th Grammy Award with previous awards including “Best Americana Album” and “Best Rock Song”. Carlile blends the line between folk and rock and creates a beautiful medley of music that is enjoyable for all. Her latest album In The Canyon Haze is out on all platforms and should definitely be a part of your playlist.
Best Dance/Electronic Music Album nominated a ton of great artists that released amazing music in the past year. The award was given to RENAISSANCE by Beyonce, but there were plenty of amazing electronic music artists that were up against this album. ODESZA released their album, The Last Goodbye, in July of 2022 which included songs such as “Light of Day (feat. Olafur Arnalds) and “The Last Goodbye (feat. Bettye LaVette). ODESZA has been a staple for all of my more upbeat playlists and this album is no different. Their newest album is available everywhere now and is perfect for a spring break playlist,
Although Ozzy Osbourne took home the award for Best Rock Album, Spoon’s Lucifer on the Sofa, was for sure a close second. Austin natives were nominated for their most recent album, which came out in November 2022. The album included popular songs such as “Wild” and “The Hardest Cut”, some of my favorite songs that came out last year. Although the band has been around since 1993, this was Spoon’s first Grammy Nomination. Spoon has a ton of amazing songs and should be a part of your daily rotation.
Best Alternative Music Album was awarded to a personal favorite of mine, Wet Leg by Wet Leg. The British band stole my heart and made its way to the top of nearly all of my playlists when this album was released in April of 2022. Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers took the world by storm when they came out with “Chaise Longue” in June of 2021 and have been riding the wave ever since. Wet Leg is truly incredible and every one of their songs on the album deserved the hype. Wet Leg’s awards of Best Alternative Music Album and Best Alternative Music Performance were extremely well deserved and I can only hope they gained a bigger fan base with these winnings. Wet Leg should be at the top of your playlists this year and at the top of everyone’s minds as they are about to take over the whole world.
I truly hope these artists, both old and new, have caught your eye as they are the future of music. The new age of music is bound for greatness with all of these amazing musical artists that we have at our fingertips.
