Among the various bars and restaurants in San Marcos, there is one that stands out from all the
rest. The Davenport, near downtown, is widely known for its unique architectural aesthetics and specialty
drinks. KTSW Loves is highlighting The Davenport, as it an LGBTQ and minority-owned led
business. While they had tons of events for Pride month, The Davenport continues to celebrate and
embrace community and inclusivity all year long. With events like drag brunch and other pride-themed
activities happening every month, folks of all backgrounds are celebrated and have a space to feel a sense
of safety and belonging.
The first location has been open for decades in the Houston area, but The Davenport San Marcos opened
its doors in late July 2020. Since then, the bar has established itself as a go–to spot for those after a
daytime drink and bite to eat, to hear live music, dance to DJs, watch movie showings, and experience
the vibrant nightlife. The Davenport has a very different vibe from all the other bars in town, both because of
its mid–century modern look as well as the general ambiance and feel. The building itself is located on a
busy street corner a few blocks from the square, and with the large outdoor dog–friendly patio, it’s the
perfect spot to people-watch.
The Davenport hosts various events like Latin night, drag brunches, both salsa and jazz nights and
the highlight of this article, is Friday Funktion. Friday Funktion is an event held on the last Friday of every
month. It is an evening of food, drinks, vendors, live music, and a silent disco. I have personally been to
Friday Funktion at the Davenport 4 times while living in San Marcos the last few years. It is absolutely
one of the most unique experiences downtown. My friends and I were driving around on a Friday night
last summer and noticed a lively atmosphere at the bar. We went on The Davenport’s Instagram page and
learned about the event, with the mission to check it out the next month.
