  1. Paddleboarding

Sewell Park is great for swimming, but even better for learning how to paddleboard. Paddleboarding is a simple and fun activity, even more fun when you do it with friends. The Outdoor Center at Sewell Park offers discounts for students. Rates start at $10 for students and alumni.

I convinced a group of my friends to give it a try and we had a blast. It can be hard at first, especially if you’re paddling the wrong way like I did, but it is so fun. You can also share a paddleboard with some else which makes it easier as you and your partner can take turns paddling. This activity is definitely a summer must-do!

  1. Ivar’s River Pub

Ivar’s River Pub specializes in Texas food. This restaurant is a great place to go try because not only is the food good, the view is amazing! Ivar’s River Pub overlooks Rio Vista Park and the San Marcos River.

Karina Astello, a Texas State University nursing student, said she likes Ivar’s River Pub brunch menu, “I am a brunch girl and Ivar’s River Pub is a fun dining experience. Definitely a must-try!”

I would say the best time to come is in the evening because after dinner you can take a walk along the river and maybe catch the sunset.

  1. River Float Trip

It isn’t a San Marcos summer if you didn’t float on the river. Taking a river float trip is a summer must! It is the pinnacle of relaxation to float the river with your friends. Rates for students and alumni start at $6 at The Outdoor Center at Sewell Park.

Karla Milian, a Texas State University business student, said she doesn’t usually enjoy water activities, but she loves to float on the river. “I can just chill in my tube and vibe. The rapids are the only part I don’t like, but it’s easy to avoid if you’re not feeling it.”

  1. Hiking Trails

San Marcos has some amazing and scenic hiking trails. These trails are good if you want to work out or if you’re looking for a picnic spot.

The San Marcos River Walk is a trail that takes you along the river and through San Marcos. This trail is great if you are into bird watching. For this trail, you should start at City Park and follow the river to Crook Park.

The Purgatory Creek Natural Area is an easy trail that is close to town. This is a popular trail and is a hot spot for picnics. Remember to clean up after yourself if you do picnic along this trail because of the wildlife.

  1. San Marcos Farmers Market

The San Marcos Farmers Market takes place every Tuesday from 3-7 p.m. There are local vendors selling local fruits and vegetables, as well as baked goods, flowers and handcrafted goods. There are also amazing food stands with a range of different cuisine from Mexican to Kenyan food. You can find the market at 1035 La Bonita Avenue in San Marcos.

Aracely Pesina said she loves going to the farmers market. “It’s a great way to save money and help the local community. As someone who moved to San Marcos for school, I think it’s important to always uplift the locals.”
