SAN MARCOS — The Texas State Student Government has started off the semester with activities for more student involvement and programs for student safety.

Student government plans to continue the Student Safety Escort program. The safety shuttle program encourages students to have alternative transportation on campus and on the square.

Students who are trained through the University Police Department will provide safety escorts Thursday to Friday from 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. For a free ride, students can call (512)-245-1689 and must present their Bobcat I.D.

“What students can look forward to are the safety shuttle programs implemented into the university,” Student Body Vice President Shaelyn Jaynes said. “I’m excited because this can help students who need to be picked up from the square and what makes this different from Nite Cats is that it goes outside the realm of campus since not everyone lives on campus.”

The safety of students on our campus remains a priority as the new semester brings in new students. Student government, partnered with the University Police Department is hosting a night safety walk Sept. 20 from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. This safety walk will provide students with information on unsafe spots and help them identify safe spots on campus.

“We will travel around campus on golf carts to help students locate proper spots, while also giving students the opportunity to get to know other bobcats,” Student Body President Kiersten Florence said.

As we roll into the new semester, student government is introducing movie nights hosted at the University Police Department front lawn, starting Thursday, Aug. 24. These events will take place every Thursday at 9:00 p.m. and will consist of different movies each night.

President Kelly Damphousse will be a guest speaker at their senate meeting Nov. 6.  Florence encourages students to attend senate meetings in the L.B.J Student Center in the teaching theater at 7:00 p.m. The Texas State Student Government remains active on their Instagram page, which holds information for events and more initiatives that will take place during the semester.

“Senate meetings are good opportunities for us to listen to what the students want and what they need,” Jaynes said. “So, we can draft legislation depending on what they want to see.”

“Something we want to emphasize this year is that as a whole student government, we are here to serve the university so any student concerns or anything the students want to continue on,” Florence said. “We want to make sure we hear them as their representatives and as student government.”
