The San Marcos music scene is experiencing a renaissance with the surge of local DIY shows. We’ve seen the flyers plastered across the square, felt the waves of generator-powered sound systems, and heard the rich sounds of local bands and artists. And now, we need to hear from the audiences. I took the liberty to engage with my favorite San Martian show rats to gather their perspectives on the local music scene. If you’re in search of inspiration to attend the next local show or seeking fresh jams for your playlist, this article is meant for you.

Sadie Potter, undergraduate student at Texas State:
“I absolutely adore the local music scene in San Marcos! The diverse music and unique people at shows make every outing a memorable experience. The amount of talented artists in San Marcos is incredible. Every genre is accounted for, though my current fav is emo. Even if the music isn’t your thing, the environment is enough to lure you in. The people are kind, and they love the music turned up loud. Not only is the music lively, but the outfits are too! I love dressing up for shows and dancing with all my girlfriends.”
Rylee Boston, former student at Texas State:
“The San Marcos music scene is nothing short of unforgettable. As a local square rat, you really get to know these artists because chances are, they’re hitting the same places you are on Thirsty Thursday! San Marcos has such an intimate music scene that I am forever grateful to be a part of.”
Kylee Holte, Texas State alum:
“I love the scene. It’s so open. No one judges, everyone is just vibes. That’s my favorite part about it honestly.”
Alyssa Willis, undergraduate student at Texas State:
“Honestly, really surprised. When I first moved here, I felt like there wasn’t a lot of a local music scene. People weren’t doing shows, and there weren’t a lot of things for people under 21 to enjoy. It grew so fast. I feel like people who are around our age really cultivated the local music scene. There are raves, metal shows, just so many things. I also think the presence of social media boosted the scene. Everybody knows what is going on. If a lot of bands didn’t take advantage of that, I feel like it wouldn’t have grown the way that it did. Also, our generation is so accepting of local music, especially post-hardcore. They get the most traction, popularity.”
Morgan Young, undergraduate student at Texas State:
“I was literally talking to Abigail about this last night and how I care so much about our local community and all of the people who put in the time, money, creativity, and effort to create something so special for everyone involved! It’s been such a unique experience to watch the community evolve in real time and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for San Marcos.”
Abigail Moon, undergraduate student at Texas:
“I like local shows because they’re a good place for community, for music enjoyers. It’s also relatively safe, well depending on location. My favorite local show was Thanks4Existing. The mix of art and music was so cool and the space and the people were so fun.”
Alex Crowder, undergraduate student at Texas State:
“Like Abigail said it’s a good place for community. Music is healing and it’s nice to see it in person and to support my peers in their endeavors while watching them grow.”
Hailey Harcar, undergraduate student at Texas State:
“The local music scene is one of the reasons this town never gets old. When moving to San Marcos for school, I never expected to be connected with a music scene like I am now. It made my life flourishing with social connections and local artistry, and I’ve even become a sort of groupie for certain bands.”
Sadie Potter, undergraduate student at Texas State:
“Two of my favorite local bands right now are Phonefoot and Corinth. You can feel the passion radiating from both the crowd and the stage.”
Rylee Boston, former student at Texas State:
“One of the first shows I went to was Kenny Normal, and I was hooked. The way they interacted with the crowd was something I had never experienced before. Almost as if you’re a life long friend of theirs. I was even more shocked to discover that they weren’t the only group with this amazing stage presence. Typical Girls is another iconic SanMo band that grasp each and every one of their crowds. Typical Girls has this ability to put their crowd into a trance. That is the only way I can describe it!”
Kylee Holte, Texas State alum:
“I’m not as knowledgeable as you in local bands, but I do like Flight by Nothing. Especially their song ‘Spinnin’ Out’.”
Alyssa Willis, undergraduate student at Texas State:
“Okay wait. Can I name two? Two of my favorite local bands/artists would be Flight by Nothing, which is more indie rock/pop music. Actually, I can’t even choose I have to name three. Okay. Another one would be Corinth, they are like post-hardcore music which is really good. The third would be Sinema. Sinema has a lot more releases. They’re local for sure, but they are based out of Denton and Dallas as well, which I think is really cool.”
Abigail Moon, undergraduate student at Texas State:
“I love Witches Exist.”
Alex Crowder, undergraduate student at Texas State:
“EddieAngel Luv is my favorite local band. Their music slaps, I love listening to it. They’re such great people to be around and have amazing energy.”
Hailey Harcar, undergraduate student at Texas State:
“My favorite local band by far is Flight By Nothing. Once I abandoned frat life after freshman year, their house shows brought me back to the party scene but in an indie way. I’ve been a groupie of theirs, following around to every show. Their energy on stage is just so electric. With Conner and his fluid dance moves and other groupies that light up the crowd, their music has brought a community into my life unlike one I’ve ever experienced. I’ll never miss one of their local shows. Neva have, neva will.”
Through these insightful perspectives, our local artists and organizers serve as more than musicians and curators; they are storytellers impacting the lives of San Marcos locals. With each interview, it felt as if I uncovered not only my favorite artists and experiences but also the collective heartbeat of a city pulsating with passion for music and connection. From seasoned veterans to emerging talents, each artist contributes a unique perspective, sound, and story. In essence, the local music scene thrives not only through the talent of its artists but also through the unwavering dedication and appreciation of its audience.
