SAN MARCOS  The Hays County Commissioners Court appointed a new fire marshal for the county at a recent meeting, Steve Seddig was welcomed into his role during the session.

Seddig joins Hays County after more than 28 years of service with the city of Wylie Fire Rescue. He served there in the position of fire marshal and was a commissioned Texas peace officer for 22 years. The Fire Marshal’s Office protects life and property through code enforcement, plan review, fire inspections and fire cause determination.

Seddig, who is pursuing his master’s degree at Texas State, said he is looking forward to giving back to the community as a fire marshal.

“It [fire marshal] puts me right in the area that I want to be for the training that I’ve been doing over the years, continuing my education and giving back to the community too,” said Seddig. “It’s [Hays County] really a growing community and exciting to be a part of it [Hays County].”

Seddig plans to bring along some change with his new position, such as adding more staff and ensuring that fire safety codes are implemented in a way that is business-friendly and sensible for existing residents.

“The goal is to get more staff to adjust to some of the growth along with myself and put together a succession plan for when I eventually do leave,” said Seddig. “And where I can improve the process for the customers that are risking their capital coming here and building businesses and systems for fire safety as well.

Seddig promises a safer and more resilient future for Hays County and anticipates fire safety measures and a safer environment for all residents and businesses.
