SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State Bobcats fell short against the University of Houston Cougars 3-2 on Sunday night.
While falling behind by two goals during the first half, the Bobcats were able to tie up the game only eight minutes into second half, however, the Cougars were able to climb back to the lead getting the win with a final score of 3-2 on Sunday night.
Head Coach Steve Holeman talked about how Sunday night’s game went and his overall opinion of the team’s performance.
“It was back and forth, down to nil at halftime, we always felt like we were still in the game,” Holeman said. “And the of course, once we got the first one, the second one came pretty quickly after that, they got their third one, but it didn’t stop us from continuing to press and get opportunities.”
At the start of the second half, the Bobcats were able to find their momentum and started putting more pressure on the Cougars defense.
Bobcat midfielder, Victoria Meza, found herself scoring her first goal of the season just eight minutes into second half, with the assist from Kaylie Smith sending a free kick where Meza headed it into the goal.
A few minutes later, Texas States’ forward, Mady Soumare scored the second goal by sending a lower-left-footed shot into the goal with the assist of Zoe Junior, taking the Bobcats to a tie scoreboard.
Holeman tells us more about what the strategy was heading into the second half and how good it worked out for them.
“Well, I think they heard us quite a bit on their right side, there was a little bit of a placement mismatch,” Holeman said. “So, we put Zoe out to the right side to kind of help neutralize that kid, and she did a really good job, and they kind of limited their attack down that side, and it also helped us create more in the attack.”
During the second half, the Bobcats had many attempts on scoring goals, ending the night with 11 shots and six shots on goal. Victoria Meza and Mady Soumare were the top game leaders for the night.
Holeman explained his thoughts on the outcome and how helpful this game could be for the team.
“Houston’s a very good team, and you know, I think, we told our team, you can walk out of here with a clear conscious knowing you gave everything,” Holeman said. “You fought hard, it’s unfortunate it didn’t go our way, but these are the games that help us get better and help prepare us for conference play.”
The Bobcats will look to get back their momentum as they hit the road to take on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls at Neal Patterson Stadium on Thursday, Sept 5, at 7:00 p.m.
