SAN MARCOS, Texas- Approximately three weeks after his hiring, new Texas State women’s basketball Head Coach Chris Kielsmeier introduced himself to Bobcat fans alongside University President Kelly Damphousse and Athletic Director Don Coryell in his introductory press conference at Strahan Arena Saturday morning.

Damphousse took the podium first to welcome everyone in attendance and sing the praises of their new hire. Damphousse ended his time on the podium showing everyone his championship ring from the last Texas State women’s basketball conference title from the 2022-2023 season.

“I’m confident we’ll be getting new rings very soon,” said Damphousse.

Coryell took the stage second to tell a story about the interview process with Kielsmeier.

“Coach Kielsmeier was our first interview and when President Damphousse and myself got off the call with coach, we had no doubts we had the right guy,” said Coryell.

Finally, Coach Kielsmeier with his family in attendance took the podium to a warm welcome standing ovation from the Bobcat faithful. He acknowledged the challenges the team will face conquering a new powerhouse conference in the PAC-12 and embraced being David to the Goliath that is the new conference.

“I know what were in for and it won’t be easy, but that’s why I’m here, I’ve never had an easy path. Players will have to look within themselves and see if this is what they really want. Everyone signs up for success until they must go through what it takes to get there. The chase is unlimited,” said Kielsmeier.

Kielsmeier comes to San Marcos from Cleveland State University, where he’s been coaching since 2018. Kielsmeier led the Lady Vikings to a 26-10 record last season and an overall record of 178-80. The Vikings made the Great 8 of the women’s NIT last season. In 2023, Kielsmeier led the Vikings to an NCAA tournament and their first Horizon League championship in school history.

Texas State will begin the chase for their first conference championship since 2023 and their first NCAA tournament bid since 2003 in the new PAC-12 starting next fall.
